The Confluence of Theory and Practice in Bharatanatya

Abstract

The constant mix-up of the two terms ‘Bharata’s Nāṭya’ and ‘BharataNāṭya’ has not only created chaos with respect to the recognition of their independent histories, but also has led to the development of ‘divorced purports’ of the two most popular, actually interlinked concepts being ‘Theory’ and ‘Practice’. This ‘jaundiced eye’ has led to serious problems causing the truth about both the aspects to suffer from ‘faulty diagnosis’ and thereby ‘dangerous treatment’. Hence a detailed probe into the subject from all angles including history, literature, technique and aesthetics is taken up in the background of the light shed by the various authoritative scholars on these various disciplines. By using the  ‘punching quotes’ of these authors, the subject has been argued upon only with the available sources ,  in search of a ‘holistic approach’ as a ‘solution’ to the problem,  by way of ‘dissolution of misrepresentation of the facts’ that has happened in the recent past. In many instances there is a strong lacuna of insufficient research work done in this regard. Hence, the same loophole has been used as an advantage; as a fact cannot be justified right, for the same reason that it cannot be justified wrong. Whether the quotes are used as supportive evidence, or for refutation; the work done till now as the source, has been the basis. The paper has also attempted to discover that, in most of the aspects; the ‘phenomenon’ that was developed into almost a ‘philosophy’, is the victim of poverty of facts, reasoning and comprehension.
